“The Social Network – You don’t get 500 million friends without making a few enemies…” This is a film I am looking forward to seeing in October. The Social Network is the movie about the “shady” beginnings of Facebook.
In it’s infancy, Facebook’s founder Mark Zuckerberg was faced with a lawsuit from ConnectU, a similiar social network website that was also developed at Harvard.
ConnectU alleged that they had contracted Zuckerberg to create their social network website, however he stole the source code and used it to launch his own social network – Facebook.
The film’s plot is based on Ben Mezrich’s book – “The Accidential Billionaires – The founding of Facebook: A tale of Sex, Money, Genius & Betrayal” and essentially portrays Zuckerberg as the “guy who started Facebook for fame, fortune and to hook up with hot girls…”
Undoubtedly, Zuckerberg claims that the film is pure fiction adding “Honestly, I wish that when people try to do journalism or write stuff about Facebook, that they atleast try to get it right”.
Regardless, I think any film based on a true story always sparks controversy as to ‘how true’ the storyline actually is. To date, the film has recieved rave reviews from its premiere at the 2010 New York Film Festival, so I am looking forward to seeing it myself on October 1st. Check out the trailer below.
